A scientific expedition from academic institutions in Moscow, Vladivostok and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk arrived on the Southern Kurils to study tsunamis.
A spokesman for the presidium of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said Wednesday that the expedition would work on the Kurils for three months.
uring this time, the scientists intend to get new information about the nature of tsunamis, a formidable natural phenomenon.
According to the Russian scientists, the largest tsunami to hit the southeastern shore of Kamchatka and the Kurils was 30 meters high and occurred about 6,000 years ago.
In 1952, a tsunami completely washed away the village of Severo-Kurilsk and killed more than 2,000 people.
