Festival of Japanese Films in Novgorod Region

The IV Festival of Japanese Films opens in the Novgorod region, northwestern Russia on Monday.

According to Alexandra Boiko, the deputy Chairwoman of the Novgorod-based cultural institution called Kinoservis, the festival opens with "The Firebird," a cartoon by Tezuka Osamu - one of the best creators of modern Japanese children's cartoons. Apart from "The Firebird," young Novgorodians will have a chance to see Isao Takahata's film "The Grave of Glowworms." The opening ceremony and the screening of the first adult film, "Basara: The Princess Goh" by Teshigahara Hiroshi, will be staged at the city's Movie Center. Other movies for grown-ups are "My Secret Treasures" by Shinobu Yaguchi, "The Osaka Story" by Kon Ichikawa, and "Charisma" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

From Veliky Novgorod, the Japanese films will move on to various district centers. All screenings in the framework of the festival are free.

The IV Festival of Japanese Films is being held on the initiative of the Japanese Embassy to Russia, the Novgorod-based Russian-Japanese friendship society Khrizantema, and the enterprise Kinoservis.
