Criminal barons in Moldavia enjoy certain privileges while doing their time, according to a special joint commission of the Prosecutor General's Office and Ministry of Justice of Moldavia that carried out an inspection in one of the country's prisons.
Members of the commission found out that high-ranking criminals had VHS players, alcoholic beverages, and knives in their cells. The authorities also found 15 mobile phones and an unregistered handgun during the inspection in prison.
Moldavian prosecutors believe that some criminals used mobile phones to exert direct influence on investigation. Criminals are thought to have called their accomplices to destroy evidence and put pressure on witnesses. The inspection was launched by the authorities following numerous reports on violations committed by prison personnel. The commission is also planning to check other correctional institutions of Moldavia, reports NEWSru.
