The work depicts the calm of sunrise interrupted by sudden movement as a gunshot spurs a pair of dogs to leap from a small boat towards a group of startled ducks.

Turner took annual tours to Switzerland between 1841 and 1844 and was inspired by the dramatic scenery around Lake Lucerne and the Rigi Mountain, Telegraph.co.uk reports.

The Blue Rigi was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder after a 10-minute bidding battle at Christie's in London for £5.832m - a record for a British watercolour, BBC News reports.
