The massacre was carried out by radical elements among the Hutu tribe, the main ethnic group in Rwanda, against the minority Tutsi or moderate Hutus, after the Hutu president of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana was killed in a plane crash.
The radical Hutu accused the moderates and the Tutsi of being behind this crash, which sparked off a bloody civil war in which it was thought between 500,000 and 800,000 people died. This figure has now been revised upwards to 934,000. Most of the victims were killed with machetes or spears.
