The Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) agency headquartered in Pakistan reported that the USA had started lifting military hardware troops from its base in the province of Hilmend, 65 km away from Kandahar. About 30 tanks and armoured personnel carriers left the base in the morning in the direction of Kandahar. The agency also provides testimony by refugees, who say that American units have appeared in the city and one of them occupied the former residence of Taliban leader Mullah Oman. American troops were seen outside Kandahar back on Saturday, when armed clashes began between the supporters of Mullah Najibullah and the troops of ex-Kandahar governor Gul Agha Sherzoi. On Sunday Hamid Karzai, chairman of the provisional Afghan government, appointed Sherzoi provisional head of the city.
