In his address to the Federal Assembly of Russia, analogous as is said to US President's State of the Nation Address, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, touched upon the principal threats faced by the nation. He said crime remained the worst among such threats and that the government must be tough fighting extortion, corruption, and other criminal activities. The president said the worst threat yet was the appearance in Russia of fascist extremists' groups that caused disorders and murdered people. Mr. Putim noted that, at this time, the law enforcement had no effective means of bringing the instigators of extremism to justice, so the only ones indicted so far had been direct perpetrators. Yet the law against extremism, he added, was about to be passed.
