Russian fishing schooner Maria has been towing for two days the American Alaska Patriot trawler in the extreme conditions of a strong gale in the Pacific. The American ship's main engine went out of operation.
According to the Far-East Service of Observation of the Fishing Fleet, over the past 24 hours the gale did not allow the schooner and the trawler which it is towing to advance at least a mile. But this is much better for the U.S. ship than drifting in the Pacific, RIA Novosti's interlocutor stressed.
Shintatu-Maru, a powerful sea tugboat, left the northern Japanese port of Wakkanai (Hokkaido island) to help the two craft. It is expected to take the American ship in tow on April 10.
The main engine of the trawler went out of operation in a strong gale on April 4. Having given a signal of distress, the craft drifted in the ocean for more than 48 hours. On Monday the Maria (her port of registry is Vladivostok) came to help the trawler. Having taken it in tow, she headed for the Kunashir island (the South Kuriles). As many as 19 people are on board the two ships.
