Yes, Big Brother really is watching. Beijing police plan to install a network of "anti-terrorism cameras" in luxury hotels, a government newspaper reported Friday. Police already operate a network of 90,000 video cameras throughout the Chinese capital that monitor traffic and can be used to follow individuals.
The plan for hotel cameras was unveiled at a meeting Wednesday of the Beijing police department, the China Daily newspaper reported.
"The cameras inside the hotels are mainly used to fight terrorism in anticipation of a tougher security situation prior to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008," the report said, citing police chief Ma Zhenchuan. Cameras will be installed in entertainment areas of hotels and around cashier desks, the newspaper said, citing the capital's police chief, Ma Zhenchuan, reports the AP. I.L.
