A land mine exploded near an army pickup truck on a road in a tribal region in northwestern Pakistan, injuring three soldiers, a government official said Tuesday. The explosion happened Monday in South Waziristan when the troops were traveling to get water from a stream, said Mohammed Wisal Khan, a local government administrator.
The soldiers were moved to a military hospital in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, but there was no detail on their injuries. Five local tribesmen and an Afghan were arrested, he said. Islamic militants, also including Arabs and Central Asians, are believed active in the area, which borders Afghanistan.
Pakistan is a key United States ally in the war against terrorism and it has deployed thousands of troops to its tribal regions along Afghanistan to track down militants, reports the AP. I.L.
