Emergency workers were headed to communities near the volcano, 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Guatemala City, said disaster agency spokesman Benedicto Giron.
If the volcano continues to erupt, Giron said, the government may issue a red alert and evacuate some 27,000 people from 78 towns and villages.
Negotiations are underway on the use of airfields in Cuba, Venezuela and Algeria. South Africa, Syria and Egypt are likely to join the list
