The US Navy aircraft P-8 Poseidon was intercepted by Russian fighters over Kamchatka.
The MiG-31 was reported to approach the spy at a distance of 15 metres and followed its flight. Intercept of the American fighter took place near the Russian Navy base of nuclear submarines.
In the US they call the Russian base a "hornet's nest".
Dave Benham, a spokesman for the Pacific Command claimed that the intercept was carried out in a "safe and professional" manner.
