Russians clinch 92 Olympic medals
Russian athletes at the XXVIII Summer Olympics in Athens have clinched 92 medals: 27 gold and silver medals, and 38 bronze ones. As a result, the Russian Olympic squad finished second, having given way to the USA with 103 medals.
The Russian team took the third place on the amount of gold medals. The US team leads with 35 gold medals; China comes third with 31.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of state Colin Powell cancelled his trip to Greece to attend the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. Powell explained the decision with tough work schedule, Reuters reports with reference to the press service of the US State Department.
Powell, however, has repeatedly expressed his opinion to visit Athens before, at the end of the Summer Olympics. Russian President Putin originally had doubts about his visit to Athens. Putin left a loophole to change the decision when the Russian president said two weeks ago that it would probably be possible to intensify his work schedule.
Apparently, Putin and Powell preferred to watch the political games, the presidential election in Chechnya, for example.
At first glance, America is mired in presidential showdown, the Republicans and the Democrats are on the brink of war, BLM protesters clash with white cops, and the economy is generally in decline
